"Forever in His Light"

Producing images at a wedding that showcase the beauty of the event helps put a wedding photographer in high demand. Creating an image like this one should not be an experiment but a simple procedure with predictable results. It is not difficult and does not require a lot of equipment. I am often asked about the filter used for this image. It is an old Hoya 7965 "Spray" filter that I purchased 15 years ago. The amount of fill light coming from the strobe at the camera determines how light the couple will be. In the image to the left, the strobe at the camera was set to 1/4th power.

A setting of 1/16th power would have placed the couple in near silhouette. (see diagram) The way that I determined what setting to use for the on camera flash is nothing more than trial and error. Since a silhouette like this is acceptable in a wide range of variations, experimentation is what will provide the best settings for repeatable results. There is a large latitude here so don't let the precise numbers weigh too heavy in your mind.
