"Just Add Winter"

The effort here was to create a feeling of romance. A fireplace, and warm brandy to sip with someone you care for. The only thing missing was the cold of winter. The bottle was lit by placing a mirror reflector behind it that was cut in the shape of the bottle. It reflected the main light panel coming from the left so the liquid had color. The liquid in the glass was adequately lit by the fire behind it. The exposure was 1/8th second at f 8 with Kodak VCS commercial film. There was a desire to make some repeating triangles. The bottle contained some triangular

shapes in the label, the glass had a triangular base, so it would be nice if the fire could also be made to look like a triangle. This was accomplished but using three balls of wadded up newspaper in our aluminum pan. Two would be packed more tightly than the third. They were arranged next to one another with the larger on in the center. Once they were lit, the center one burned more quickly than the other more tightly packed ones. As a result the up draft pulled the smaller flames from the sides in toward the center thereby producing the triangular shape to the fire. Only one additional light was used other than the main light. A flash head was positioned under the table and aimed back at a white card located just below the camera lens. This reflected light provided basic fill for the label and the highlight on the black pipe in the foreground.
