"Honor and Glory"

This civil war portrait was photographed on Kodak T-Max black and white film and then printed onto Kodak color paper. The color adjusted to be sepia tone. Printing this sort of an image in a color reminds us of old portraits from days long gone. The portraits of the day rarely showed a smile. Many people are not aware of the reason for this. Film was so slow that exposures were often quite long thereby requiring an expression that could remain stable for a fairly long time. The lighting used was a blend between loop and split lighting. The main light was lower than usual to insure getting light under the hat.
